Green Surf is a restorative landscape design firm in East Hampton, New York founded by Lucia and Ken Maxwell.

Lucia and Ken’s passion for sharing the outdoors and the wonders of our natural environment with family, friends and our community is at the heart of Green Surf’s creative process in realizing serene and visually dynamic yet environmentally responsible spaces for our clients.

Native plantings are central to what we do at Green Surf in every project to preserve and restore The East End as Mother Nature intended.  We believe in planting with a purpose and each plant is carefully considered not only for its beauty and function, but also its beneficial impact on the environment and wildlife.

We strive to promote healthy yard practices, such as educating our clients on the harmful effects of fertilizers, herbicides, the overuse of water, and planting invasive plants that outcompete with our native plants.

Prior to founding Green Surf, Lucia was an attorney focusing on commercial litigation.  She is a self-taught graphic designer and has a passion for creating safe havens for wildlife. Lucia is also a wildlife rescue volunteer for the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center.  Ken was a former Director and Board Member of Gagosian Gallery, NY where he worked with top private and public art collections around the world.  Ken has extensive experience working with artists creating exhibition spaces to showcase their work in both indoor and outdoor environments.  He brings this level of expertise in realizing spaces to every Green Surf project.

Ken is an avid surfer who loves the ocean and both Lucia and Ken work with local initiatives to protect and preserve our planet.  Ken is on the Advisory Board for ChangeHampton which works to promote restorative, biodiverse and healthy landscapes on the East End as well as the Ocean Friendly Gardens Committee for the Surfrider Foundation Eastern Long Island.  Both Ken and Lucia also help lead the parent environmental committee at the Ross School.

our process

Our process begins with a complementary site visit to meet and listen to our clients to best understand their goals for the project, time frame, and budget. We will walk your property and identify spaces that should be highlighted.

Our mission in every project at Green Surf is to have a restorative approach with native plantings and work with our client to invest in the health of their outdoor spaces. Not only is this beneficial for the environment, but native plantings require less water and are more hardy (since they were meant to be here!), less susceptible to disease and pests and ultimately are more cost efficient with less required maintenance.

Following our preliminary site visit, a beautiful master design plan is hand-drawn along with accompanying plant selection and plant palette taking into careful consideration which plants will thrive best in different parts of your outdoor space. At this stage in the process we encourage feedback from our clients to discuss any questions, concerns or amendments that should be made.

We work with local nurseries to provide competitive plant pricing. Once planting is completed, we offer a variety of plant care programs that include seasonal planting, pruning and/or weeding.  Note:  We are not a lawn maintenance or irrigation company but can supply referrals upon request.
